No Peeking!

Practice with your eyes closed. It really helps. If the concept is foreign to you, start with finding the groups of two and three black keys from one end of the keyboard to the other. Then, work with the major scales, diatonic triads, patterns and so forth, until you are able to play anything with your eyes closed. If you have some pieces in your fingers already (memorized), work with those slowly, then up to tempo.

For an extra bonus, try finding some chords, big interval leaps or clusters, then place your hands in your lap for a few seconds. THEN, keeping your eyes closed (NO PEEKING!), find them again. This strategy will help you develop an intimate rapport with the keyboard and allow you to concentrate your vision more on the music in front of you. OR, while away from the keyboard, you will have a stronger mental image to help work out other ideas as they may come to you in moments of inspiration!
